چکیده

Mosquito larvae and their predators or pathogens expected to co-exist in every breeding habitat of mosquito ranging from small temporary sites to large permanent sites. Micro invertebrates are more common, prevalent and numerous than macro invertebrates in aquatic habitats. Micro invertebrates are important as food sources for macro invertebrates and fish (Gilbert and Burns, 1999; Hampton and Gilbert, 2001; Hampton et al., 2000). Many also prey on insect larvae (Marten, 1990). So in order to formulate an effective less environmentally hazardous vector control method, knowledge of microfauna associated in mosquito larval habitats and the density of available micro fauna in any mosquito inhabiting area is important. Kramer (1964) reported flagellates are rather common intestinal parasites of adult s mosquitoes. Das (2003) reported pathogens can be used to control mosquitoes during its larval stage also reported several species of protozoans ISSN: 2319-7706 Volume 3 Number 5 (2014) pp. 587-598 http://www.ijcmas.com

Characterization of Mosquito Breeding Sites in and in the Vicinity of Tigray Microdams

BACKGROUND Malaria vector control in Ethiopia has a history of more than 50 years, but malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia. Thus, targeting the control program on the larval stage is of paramount importance. This study aimed to characterize the aquatic habitats of vector mosquito larvae associated with micro-dams. METHODS Cross-sectional larval survey was cond...

Species Composition and Diversity of Malaria Vector Breeding Habitats in Trincomalee District of Sri Lanka

INTRODUCTION Mosquito larval ecology is important in determining larval densities and species assemblage. This in turn influences malaria transmission in an area. Therefore, understanding larval habitat ecology is important in designing malaria control programs. METHOD Larval surveys were conducted in 20 localities under five sentinel sites (Padavisiripura, Gomarankadawala, Thoppur, Mollipoth...

Physico-chemical characteristics of Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles varuna breeding water in a dry zone stream in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Selected physico-chemical characteristics of flowing and pooled water in a stream that generated two malaria vectors, Anopheles culicifacies s.l. Giles and Anopheles varuna Iyengar, were investigated during August-September 1997 and July 1998 at the Upper Yan Oya watershed in north-central Sri Lanka. METHODS The physico-chemical parameters measured were: temperature, d...
